Hanks in his next role - the astronaut and commando Jim Lovell, in the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995) - brought him back together with Ron Howard. The film was generally praised by critics, and also by the performances of the whole ensemble (which comprised Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris) as well as Kathleen Quinlan. The film received nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks then acted as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animation film Toy Story (1995). A year later, Hanks made his directorial debut in the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) about the rise and decline of a 1960s music group. He also took on the role of a producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel described his performance as "charming" and most critics agreed that Hanks' portrayal earned him a spot among the top romantic comedy actors of the time.
